Trial Summary:

The Australian Placental Transfusion Study (APTS) group has conducted the largest ever randomised controlled trial of placental transfusion in very preterm babies. The study enrolled patients from 25 hospitals in seven countries around the world. The trial aimed to determine whether giving a placental transfusion at birth, by deferring clamping and cutting the cord at resuscitation improves systemic blood flow and ischaemia-reperfusion injury to brain and gut and reduces exposure to donor blood, and thus reduces sepsis, retinopathy, poor growth, mortality, morbidity and disability, in 1600 babies born at less than 30 weeks' gestation.
