Trial Summary:

The A La CaRT study compares surgery using laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) in treating rectal cancer. Patients who have had a diagnosis of primary cancer of the rectum (stage T 1-3, N 0-2, M 0-1) requiring surgery are eligible. The primary aim is to determine whether laparoscopy-assisted resection of rectal cancer is noninferior (or equivalent) in safety and efficacy to the open technique of laparotomy and surgical resection. The secondary aim of the study is to determine whether laparoscopy-assisted rectal resection is equivalent to open rectal resection in recovery outcomes and in terms of disease recurrence, survival and quality of life.
