MPhil, PhD, FAHA
Dr Kwok Leung Ong (PhD, 2010) is a Senior Research Fellow and his research interests include (i) identification of plasma biomarkers for cardiovascular disease and its risk factors; and (ii) epidemiology of CVD risk factors with publication of one book chapter, 91 original articles, 16 reviews, and 3 letters to the editor in peer-reviewed journals that have attracted 6703 citations (h-index = 37; Google Scholar 7/2/2023). Dr Ong’s contribution to CVD research has been recognized by his appointment as a Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) in 2016, and an editorial board member of the Journal of AHA since 2021. He has actively contributed as a grant review panel member to the NHMRC and the National Heart Foundation.
Through initiating and leading collaborations with internationally recognised investigators, Dr Ong has obtained access to clinical samples and data from large-scale clinical trial and cohort studies, including the FIELD trial, Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), and the TNT trial for studies of cardiovascular biomarkers such as fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). He is also interested in nutritional biomarkers such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and their relationship with cardiovascular risk factors, especially chronic kidney disease.
