Dr. Mugdha Joglekar is a researcher with training, experience and passion to develop a career in diabetes. She is a JDRF international advanced post-doctoral fellow at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre, University of Sydney and leads the molecular biology and epigenetics group.
Mugdha was trained in pancreatic islet biology, progenitor cells, epigenetics and microRNAs during her PhD at the National Center for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, India and University of Bath, UK. She initiated post-doctoral studies at the St. Vincent’s Institute, Melbourne, Australia with Prof. Helen Thomas and Prof. Tom Kay, where she was trained in immunology of diabetes and obtained her first JDRF (USA) post-doctoral fellowship to study human islet cell death in type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Joglekar joined NHMRC CTC, University of Sydney in 2012 and has been working on understanding the role of microRNAs as biomarkers of diabetes as part of her ADS Skip Martin fellowship, University of Sydney-Tony Basten Award and JDRF (USA) Advanced Post-doctoral award.
Dr. Joglekar is an emerging leader with major research interests in microRNAs, progenitor cells, epigenetics; all focused on better understanding diabetes pathogenesis and finding a cure, while using multiple cutting edge techniques in molecular and cellular biology. Combining these fields of her experience and expertise, she leads a unique and important area of microRNA-mediated immunomodulation, where human islet-derived progenitor cells regulate immune cell proliferation, potentially via novel microRNAs and/or other immunomodulatory molecules.
Dr. Joglekar actively supervises and mentors graduate students and post-graduate fellows within the department in the area of diabetes. She collaborates with Anand Hardikar, Wayne Hawthorne, Alicia Jenkins, Anthony Keech, Martha Lappas, Ann Simpson, Helen Thomas (all from Australia), Louise Torp Dalgaard (Denmark), Arie Moran (Israel), Karl Bacos (Sweden) and Kirstie Danielson, Raghu Mirmira (USA). Her research is primarily supported by JDRF, USA and Diabetes Australia and is based within the Islet Biology and Diabetes research at the NHMRC CTC.
