A/Prof Anandwardhan A. Hardikar

Head of Islet Biology and Diabetes group

Anand was trained in Genetics for his Masters and then in pancreas regenerative biology and diabetes for his PhD at the National Center for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, India and the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium. 

Anand continued post-doctoral training in understanding the role of Pdx1 in islet development and function at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Doris Stoffers), in maturation of human fetal pancreatic islets at the University of New South Wales (Bernie Tuch) and then in pancreatic islet progenitor cell biology at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda (Marvin Gershengorn), before he went on to start his own research group (in 2006) focusing on non-coding (nc) RNAs and diabetes at the National Center for Cell Science, Pune, India. 

Following his last role as the group leader in Diabetes and Islet Biology at O’Brien Institute, St. Vincent’s Hospital and the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia (2009-2012), he joined the NHMRC Clinical Trials Center as an ARC Future Fellow in Feb 2012, to lead research in Islet Biology and Diabetes. 

Anand is currently an Associate Professor and JDRF Australia T1D CRN Clinical Research Fellow, group leader for the Islet Biology and Diabetes group, Vice-President of the Islet Society, Sweden and a Visiting Professor with the Danish Diabetes Academy (DDA). 

He also holds similar visiting professorial positions at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, India, the DYP University and Medical College, Pune, India and Sidra Research Institute, Doha, Qatar.
